The purpose of this seminar series is to engage first year medical students in an integrated analysis of historical and contemporary aspects of the intersection between race and genetics/genomics, and their relation to health and healthcare. The seminar focuses on topics concerning various applications of race in science and medicine, and includes lectures, films, case studies, and small group discussions led by the faculty.

This course exposes and explores the separate and joint contributions of biological and non-biological factors to health and wellbeing in peoples from various regions and countries of the African Diaspora. The course draws on a variety of disciplines, modes of inquiry, and health problems in comparative analyses of genetic, historical, political, and sociocultural dimensions of the African Diaspora. The content of the course includes the transatlantic African Diaspora as well as other African Diaspora streams.

This course provides students with an overview of sickle cell disease, including its genetics, epidemiology, pathophysiology, medical complications, psychosocial challenges, and health service utilization from a global perspective. Patients’ experience with discrimination and stigmatization is explored as well as differences in how the disease is viewed and managed in various countries.
